Production of silica nano particles bound fabrics and evaluation of its antibacterial/UV production properties

Manufacture of microbe resistant clothing’s is the need of the hour especially in microbe sensitive environments like hospitals. Silicon nanoparticles (SNP) were prepared from xerogels synthesized from cotton pods. In the present study, a novel antibacterial fabric (AF)  was prepared using SNP, non-woven cotton fabrics  and polyethylene glygol (PEG). Different types of AF were prepared by incorporation of different concentration of the SNP. Among the AF, 3% exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethylazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide) assay proved the biocompatibility of the SNP. The smooth surface morphologies of the AF were proved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectrum of AF represented the characteristic bands of all the components, i.e., SNP, PEG and cotton fiber. A potential AF, which possesses microbe resistant clothing’s  and  hence, they could be of promising use in medical cloths production.
