Abstract

The use of antibacterial agents is critical to the successful treatment of infectious diseases. Although there are varieties of drugs that are routinely used to treat infections in humans, there are several reasons why the discovery and development of new antibacterial agents are important. Over the past few decades, there has been an increased development of resistance in organisms that are typical pathogens in humans. This increased resistance has limited the selection of antibacterials that may be used to treat specific organisms. New antibacterials are therefore needed for resistant strains. Hence new opportunities and challenges are still in this field which is discussed.
